Selecting Adult Baseball Bat

By: X Bats

Adult wood baseball bats aren't all the same. Great adult wood baseball bats are made of rock maple because it's as strong and dense as wood for bats can be, yielding great durability and long life (lasting 3 times longer and performing up to 20% better than traditional ash). With a very tight grain, rock maple reduces bat flaking and splitting problems. It's hard to go wrong with the hardest wood available for bats—and that's what most X Bat adult custom pro baseball bats are made of. Major Leaguers know this well.

While Maple is the hardest, best-performing wood, some players today are opting for birch bats, and others prefer the traditional feel of a more flexible ash bat. Because choice is what matters, X Bats focuses on what's right for the individual player—including wood choice. By carefully sourcing its ash, birch and maple from the only best forest locations in the optimal latitudes, X Bats ensures that whichever wood a player chooses it is of a grade that can perform to the same exceptional standards the company produces for Major League hitters.

What to Look For in Adult Custom Pro Wood Bats

Choosing a custom bat is ultimately all about performance. To perform best, bats have to be the perfect fit for the adult player—the right size and weight. The right bat is a singular choice; it has to work for the individual player. What works for teammates isn't the answer when buying an adult bat off the shelf (as opposed to ordering it custom made). It's best to remember that player and bat need to balance each other to perform well together. The bat needs to feel right and comfortable in the adult player's hands to ensure a consistently confident and controlled swing. You don't want to select a bat that's too heavy for you to swing with energy, confidence and precision or too light to sacrifice performance.

For players genuinely seeking to improve their game by switching from aluminum to wood, having the right choice of wood adult baseball bats is even more important. A successful switch requires selecting a wood bat with the most comfortable shape, balance and feel. This is challenging because non-wood bats have hollow barrels and weight concentrated in the handle for super light swing feel. Wood bats have the weight where the wood is- in the barrel, completely opposite of non-wood bats.

X Bats has met the market's needs by designing wood baseball bats for adult wood bat baseball players for 16 years, which has enabled many refinements in its adult custom pro baseball bats to maximize feel and balance, meet the demands of the most discriminating players, and the particular needs of players transitioning from aluminum and composite bats.

Handle thicknesses ranging from 7/8” to 1.25”, handle flares (large and medium), and knob styles (small or large, conventional or rounded) combine to give you the following general types of adult baseball bats to choose from, each in nine lengths from 32” to 36”, including ½ inch increments:

  • Best Balanced / Model 27 — Based on the traditional C271 shape, Model 27 has a flared 15/16" to 1" handle, a small regular knob, and a long straight transition to a 2 1/2" barrel. This medium-handle, medium-barrel bat—with a weight range no lighter than -3—is our second most well balanced.
  • Model 27
  • Best Balanced / Model 73 — The most popular new style in the Big Leagues, Model 73 sells two-to-one over the other models. Its tapered medium-sized 15/16" handle flares to a very large knob and features a full power-hitter's 2 5/8" barrel. The large knob is a counterweight, giving the bat a very balanced and lighter feel than other same-weight bats, and the handle-to-knob flare reduces hamate-bone bruising. Available with a weight range no lighter than -2 this is the best-balanced wood bat available—by far—and a perfect shape (well balanced and easy to control) for hitters switching from aluminum to wood. It's ideal for use by power hitters who like its comfort and gap hitters who like its balance and large hitting area.
  • Model 73
  • Best Balanced / Model JR42 — This is the old-school bat (as used by the late great baseball hero Jackie Robinson and popular in the 1950s big leagues for its thick-handled control) featuring a very thick 1 1/4" handle transitioning to a thin 2 1/2" barrel that provides the large mass a heavy bat needs to put balls behind the ball—but with exceptional balance, great pop and bat. Available only in -1 or heavier, its balance makes it feel 3 – 4 ounces lighter.
  • Model JR42
  • End Loaded / Model 13 — Based on the I13, this bat's tapered knob is a slightly smaller 1 15/16" and thinner at the base, It has a thin 29/32" handle, a 2 5/8" barrel, and a weight range no lighter than -2. The barrel is turned as full as possible for the desired weight/length differential. It delivers a very end-loaded feel for power hitters who prefer a thin handle and small knob with a slight flare, and who like to feel the “crack-the-whip” barrel snap through the hitting zone. This bat works well for players accustomed to thin-handled non-wood bats.
  • Model
  • End Loaded / Model 24 — Based on the traditional C243 shape, this ultimate thin-handle, big-barreled bat's 15/16" handle diameter is smaller at its contact point with the conventional knob. The 2 5/8" barrel is turned as full as possible, and the weight range is best at no lighter than a -2. An end-loaded bat used by many Major League power hitters, this bat is for experienced wood-bat hitters with short swings and who prefer end-of-bat weight for more whip.
  • Model 24
  • End Loaded / Model 45 — Similar to a 456B, with a thin 29/32" handle and a narrow transition to a large long 2 9/16" big barrel, is an end-loaded bat for a big, strong power hitter.
  • Model 45
  • Thin Handled / Model 15 — Similar to an M159, an old-school model designed for Stan Musial, Model 15 is a well-balanced conventional-handled bat with a medium-sized 2 1/2" barrel and a 29/32" handle. This bat has a smaller junction of handle transitioning straight to a smaller knob, and works well for anyone looking for a lighter bat in the -3 range.
  • Model 15
  • Thin Handled / Model 17 — Similar to a G174, Model 17 is an end-loaded power-hitter's bat with a very thin 7/8" handle, a small knob, and a medium-large 2 9/16" barrel.
  • Model 17
  • Thin Handled / Model 53 — Similar to an M253, this unique and very hard bat is for the player with a great eye looking for the hardest wood without a lot of weight. It has a very thin 2 7/16" barrel, and a thin handle 7/8" and transition. The wood used on the 53 is very hard since the weight is compressed into a very thin bat.
  • Model 53
  • Medium Handled / Model 14 — Based on the traditional T141 shape, Model 14 is a thin-handled medium-barreled bat with a slightly smaller 1 15/16" squared-off knob, a thin 7/8" handle, a 2 9/16" barrel, and a weight range no lighter than -3. This bat is for gap/power hitters who prefer a thin handle and good balance.
  • Model 14
  • Medium Handled / Model 27 — Based on the traditional C271 shape, this well-balanced medium-handle and medium-barrel bat features a flared 15/16" to 1" handle, a small regular knob, a long straight transition to a 2 1/2" barrel, and a weight range no lighter than -3. It is X Bat's second most well-balanced bat.
  • Model 27
  • Medium Handled / Model 98 — The longest-barreled bat X Bat makes, Model 98 has a long handle with a quick taper transition to a full medium barrel. Its 15/16" handle, small knob, 9/16" barrel, and weight range no lighter than -2 give it a profile similar to aluminum bats—but the longer barrel makes it an end-loaded bat with the largest hitting area of any wood bat.
  • Model 98
  • Thick Handled / Model 11T — Similar to an M110 but with a slightly thicker handle, Model 11T is a well-balanced bat with a slightly flared 1 1/16" handle, a conventional knob, a 2 9/16" barrel, and a weight range no lighter than -3.
  • Model 11T
  • Thick Handled / Model 16VT — Similar to an R161—but with a 1/8" thicker handle—Model 16VT is a thick-handled, big-barreled, heavier-than-average bat. Its very thick 1 1/4" handle, conventional knob, 2 9/16" barrel, and weight range at no lighter than a -2, this bat is favored by power hitters who favor thick handles and contact hitters who rely on the control a thick handle provides.
  • Model 16VT
  • Thick Handled / Model 20 — Similar to a Big Stick 205, Model 20 has a very slightly flared 31/32" handle, a thick conventional knob, a 2 9/16" barrel, and a weight range no lighter than -2. If you're a hitter who enjoys feeling the bat in your hands and controlling your swing, this bat's for you.
  • Model 20
  • Power Hitters / Model XX — Model XX is a big-barreled, thin-handled, power-hitter's bat with a 2 5/8" full barrel, 15/16" handle, a large-diameter conventional knob (to stop your hands from sliding), and a weight range not lighter than -2.
  • Model XX
  • Power Hitters / Model 2427 — With the traditionally shaped C243 barrel and C271 handle and flared knob, Model 2427 is the ultimate big-barreled bat—but with added balance and comfort. The handle diameter is 15/16", the barrel is turned as full as possible to 2 5/8", and weight range is best at no lighter than a -2. This is an end-loaded bat for experienced wood-bat hitters with short swings who want the weight at the end of their bat, but like the comfort of a flared handle. It's used by many Major League power hitters.
  • Model 2427
  • Power Hitters / Model 73 —The most popular new style in the Big Leagues, Model 73 sells two-to-one over the other models.
